The life science industry in Pennsylvania today has more than 2,300 businesses employing close to 80,000 people with a 459,720 total employment impact (5.8 national multiplier).  All this growth has led to a significant economic impact close to $1 billion and created significant workforce opportunities in biotechnology for those employees with a master’s degree. BIO, a national biotechnology industry advocacy group, reports that Pennsylvania’s concentration of bioscience employment is 9 percent greater than the national average and the state is considered to have a specialized employment base in two of the five major subsectors—drugs and pharmaceuticals and research, testing, and medical labs.

Advanced Manufacturing

Advanced Manufacturing is also known as the “Digital Factory”, “Smart Factory” or “Industry 4.0”, which is the application of digital technologies to the manufacturing process. The Advanced Manufacturing Program includes technologies such as Autonomous Robots, System Integrations, Internet of Things (IoT), Simulation, Additive Manufacturing, Cloud Computing, Augmented Reality (AR), Big Data, Cybersecurity, Digital Twins, Compliant Robots, Industrial Networking, Material Testing and the mainstreaming of New Processes. The program is centered on hands-on activities to provide a practical understanding of processes, equipment, software and materials. The scope of the Advanced Manufacturing Program is to follow the Cradle to Grave Gated Engineering Life Cycle used at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, providing structure for work and a sense of social responsibility.

This Bachelor of Science program produces a well-prepared student to deliver novel and sustainable solutions to the increasingly challenging environmental and natural resource problems of the future. The program has an interdisciplinary set of courses that will give the student career-ready experience in field work, analysis, communication, and management.
