Harrisburg University Engineering and Energy Professor Dr. Arvind Ravikumar recently weighed in on gas industry companies and their desire to relay an environmentally-conscious image to investors.

In the article, “To cut methane leaks — and maybe work on their image — 2 Pa. gas drillers eye ‘responsibly sourced’ label,” Ravikumar said investors want to back environmentally-conscious companies and other countries don’t want a product that doesn’t mesh with their climate goals. And climate change is a top priority for the Biden Administration, he said.

To truly make a change and cut emissions, Ravikumar said technology must be effective, widely used and reliable.

Certification programs can be helpful in the short term, he added, noting it will take time to transition away from natural gas.

“I think this is a neat concept,” Ravikumar said. “Having these pilot projects will tell us if, in the real world, it’s reducing as much emissions as we think it’s going to.”
