HARRISBURG, PA The Secondary Schools Team at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) has received the Outstanding Partnership Award from the Carroll County Career and Technology Center (CTC), a “first-class educational institution dedicated to the application of knowledge, use of technology, and preparation of students for the future in a variety of academic and professional fields.” At the conclusion of every school year, CTC recognizes two of its business partners for their contributions to CTC’s internship experiences. The award was presented at the CTC Partnership event on May 15th.

Sarah A. Jones, Career Connections Coordinator at CTC, noted: “This year, I would like to award you and Harrisburg University with our Outstanding Partnership Award for your dedication to the implementation of our first-ever remote internship and all of the hard work necessary to get that off the ground! We appreciate all your efforts for our students and our program.”

Currently, the Center employs three CTC students who have taken Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) classes through HU’s College in the High School (CiHS) program. These students work up to 20 hours per week using GIS to identify abandoned and orphaned oil and gas wells in the state of Pennsylvania. The program provides them with valuable experience as well as a paid internship.

Craig Lewis, Secondary Schools team member and HU’s Director of the Center for Applied Environmental & Geospatial Technology, said: “The three Carroll County students have been a tremendous asset to our project team, working on a larger project for the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) where they have been identifying oil and gas wells through the Commonwealth using a collection of historic maps. They have been provided the opportunity to do this through an excellent education provided by Mr. Paul Burnside, Mrs. Sarah Jones, and the team at Carroll County. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Carroll County in the future.”

Albert Sarvis, PMP, GISP, Program Lead of Geospatial Technology, added: “Experiential learning is HU’s calling card, and this prototype project is a great example. It touches on several important themes for us, such as environmental science, natural conservation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our students’ STEM skills and familiarity with new technology standards can help address our collective impact on the environment – an impact that will increasingly influence our quality of life. I’m looking forward to watching our students apply their skills and seeing where this project takes us in the future.”

Harrisburg University extends its heartfelt thanks to the Carroll County Career and Technology Center for their commitment to collaboration and experiential learning. Our students – and our Commonwealth – are made stronger through partnerships like these.
