Veterans across the state are eligible for scholarships that lead to in-demand entry level technology jobs thanks to a state grant awarded to NuPaths, an IT workforce development training provider co-founded by Harrisburg University to prepare students for well-paying and in-demand entry level technology jobs in six months.
The funding, delivered to NuPaths from Gov. Tom Wolf for a workforce development project as part of the Veterans Employment Program (VEP), which helps connect veterans with job opportunities and employment support in Pennsylvania counties with high unemployment rates for veterans.
NuPaths received $199,998 to train veterans across the commonwealth for entry-level jobs for network technician and IT security analyst roles. Programs will be offered in an accessible distance-learning format and provide technical skills training, industry certifications, and the job search and readiness skills needed to begin an apprenticeship or full-time IT jobs.
Launched in 2018, NuPaths is a college alternative for recent high school graduates, veterans, and those in career-transition. Students learn the IT skills and receive the industry-recognized certifications needed to enter today’s IT Job market. NuPaths also works with high school seniors through programs embedded into the school day and available after school.
Funding for this project will be used to reduce or eliminate financial, time, transportation, computer access, and personal barriers for veterans by providing the short-term technical and employment skills training needed for them to obtain an entry-level IT position.
NuPaths’ students funded by the grant will be given a laptop for participation in the program, and to assist in their job search. Classes will be held 3 days a week (Tues., Wed., and Thurs.) with students connecting to an online instructor-led class session from 6-7:30 PM each night. Students also have access to instructors on other days of the week either via email or by appointment, and through regularly scheduled office hours and tutoring. Career services support is integrated into the program with business skills workshops, guest speakers and interviews with 3-5 employers.
NuPaths has educated more than 400 students, who have earned over 725 certifications and over 1,600 college credits. NuPaths is a training partner with 12 workforce development boards in PA and has worked with high school students from 25 PA school districts. Gov. Wolf’s support will help expand its programs that provide job-specific skill sets for IT security operations, technical support, software testing, and digital marketing positions.
