Title:AI in Learning and Educational Assessment: What we already do, what we want, and what we shouldn’t be doing
Description: Artificial Intelligence has been used in educational assessments since the mid-nineties for automated scoring of essays. Since then, automated speech, spoken dialogues, and content scoring have been added applying various forms of signal detection and machine learning. More recently, attention on AI in Education has migrated towards personalized learning and assessment. Unfortunately, the promise of big data and complex cognitive modeling leads to the overpromise of educational technology. At worst, individualized learning becomes isolated learning while big data turns out to be remarkably small in educational contexts. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of the most noteworthy uses of AI in education so far, followed by a perspective on where this rapidly growing field could productively be going, and where it should certainly not go.
