Learning about blockchain and cryptocurrency helps us understand how money works in a way that is open and fair, making it easier for more people to access financial services. It also teaches us new skills that can be useful in the digital world, providing chances to come up with new ideas and be part of the growing blockchain industry. 

Hundreds of students enroll in blockchain and cryptocurrency courses at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology each year.  

Courses include:

Bitcoin Blockchain* Covers the foundations of cryptocurrency, bitcoin, and blockchain. Taught six times per year.

Description: Bitcoin and its underlying blockchain technology are disruptive innovations which are having a major impact on the financial industry and other industries.  This course provides a technical introduction to Bitcoin, Blockchain, cryptography, keys and addresses, wallets, transactions, decentralized consensus, mining, and other Bitcoin technologies.

Ethereum Blockchain Covers smart contracts, non-fungible tokens, Web3, and decentralized applications, is taught twice a year.

Description: Ethereum is an exciting alternative to Bitcoin that provides support for Smart Contracts and Decentralized Applications (DApps) that are not possible to create on Bitcoin. This course offers not only a core developer experience for the Ethereum platform with Web3 and the Solidity programming language, but also offers a comprehensive survey of how the Ethereum platforms have contributed to a completely new offering of DApps. Topics that are covered include Metamask wallet, Remix integrated development environment, transactions, keys and addresses,  decentralized consensus, oracles, tokens, smart contract security, and other Ethereum technologies.

Blockchain Scalability Covers the Lightning Network and other blockchain scalability efforts, is taught twice a year.

Description: Blockchain Technology has ushered in a range of blockchain technologies. Different blockchains have selected different trade-offs in terms of scalability, interoperability, and decentralization. This course begins with a basic introduction to growth challenges faced by blockchains and how that has evolved in the blockchain ecosystem. This course describes different approaches to scalability including the Lightning Network, channels, sidechains, plasma, rollups, appchains, and hyperchains.

Cryptocurrency and Regulation* Covers government regulatory efforts on cryptocurrencies, is taught four times a year.

Description: After the emergence of Bitcoin, thousands of cryptocurrencies have surfaced with a vast supportive infrastructure for exchange of this value. This has resulted in diverse responses from governments and other regulating bodies. This course contains a comprehensive history of crypto assets and infrastructure, including exchanges, wallets, tokens, central bank-issued digital currencies, and the state of regulations. This course gives the student an introduction of blockchain assets, as well as explain how government jurisdictions are responding to this unique disruption.

Decentralized Finances* Covers how cryptocurrency technologies are disrupting traditional finance and lending, is taught four times a year.

Blockchain is a fundamental disruption in the history of ledger technology, and it will deeply impact the future of all ledger-centric institutions such as central banks, commercial banks, companies and exchanges, as well as the currencies and assets that are transacted and traded inside them. This course covers Decentralized Finance (DeFi), the innovations and risks of DeFi, the range of existing DeFi applications and protocols, the extent to which DeFi is disrupting traditional finance, Fungible Tokens and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

HU’s certificate programs can be taken independently or in conjunction with a degree.  The Certificate in Blockchain and Cryptocurrency is available to those interested in earning professional development certification in Blockchain and Cryptocurrency technologies.  The Certificate in Blockchain and Cryptocurrency requires the following four courses: Bitcoin Blockchain, Ethereum Blockchain, Cryptocurrency and Regulation, and Decentralized Finance.  This certificate provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a knowledgeable leader in this rapidly growing field. Students can enroll in certificate programs as non-degree graduate students or as Master of Science degree-seeking students. Certificate programs are not approved by Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to enroll non-immigrant students. For students pursuing a Master’s Degree in Information Systems Engineering and Management (ISEM), Blockchain and Cryptocurrency courses can be taken as graduate elective courses or as part of a concentration in Blockchain and Cryptocurrency. The ISEM Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Concentration requires the following courses: Bitcoin Blockchain, Cryptocurrency and Regulation, Decentralized Finance, and two elective courses.

Accepting Applications for Fall 2024

The master’s degree with concentration in Blockchain and Cryptocurrency is approved for international nonimmigrant students.  The certificate program is not approved for international nonimmigrant students.
