HARRISBURG, PA — As part of its efforts to prioritize student well-being, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) is evolving and expanding its mental health services through a new partnership with BetterMynd, a nationally recognized teletherapy platform. BetterMynd partners with colleges and universities to provide students with tailored access to licensed mental health counselors via secure video sessions.
Beginning this spring, HU will transition from on-campus, in-person counseling sessions to a flexible 24/7 teletherapy model. This shift in service delivery will give students discreet and flexible access to a larger network of licensed, medically trained mental health professionals from across the country, providing access to care anytime and anywhere it’s needed.
Recognizing that this change may require an adjustment period, officials emphasize that these new services will enhance both the availability and the breadth of HU’s counseling support for students.
“The health and safety of our learners is, and will always remain, our top priority,” said David A. Schankweiler, Interim President of Harrisburg University. “We’re making this change to add capacity to HU’s mental health services, and to ensure that students who desire or require counselors with a clinical or specialty background can reach them easily. Our goal, whether designing new programs or offering a sympathetic ear, is to provide a valuable, and above all safe, experience for students from all walks of life. Our counseling support, just like the rest of our student services, should meet learners where they are and offer the best experience possible.”
Safe and Private Spaces Remain Available
As the HU Counseling Center winds down its physical presence and transitions to a virtual delivery model through BetterMynd, newly allocated safe spaces will be made available for students, designated specifically for use during teletherapy sessions. These designated rooms will be equipped with the necessary technology and soundproofing to support focused, uninterrupted conversations between students and their therapists.
Harrisburg University will also retain an on-campus counseling ambassador who will engage with students seeking mental health services and ensure student inquiries reach the right party quickly and discreetly.
“The privacy and continuity of care for our students are central priorities for us in this transition,” added President Schankweiler.
Clinically Trained Counselors and Expanded Access
HU’s on-campus counselors have provided invaluable support to students over the years and laid an important foundation for HU’s culture of care. But as university students increasingly prioritize their mental health, and managing the stressors of modern living compounds with the demands of higher education, a more sustainable and comprehensive offering of services is required.
Through BetterMynd, students now have access to a national network of licensed mental health professionals — many of whom specialize in issues commonly faced by college students, including anxiety, depression, academic stress, cultural adjustment, and identity exploration.
“I know how hard it can be for a college student to struggle with their mental health,” said BetterMynd Founder and CEO, Cody Semrau. “Our platform gives students the ability to connect with licensed therapists who reflect their backgrounds, schedules, and specific needs. Whether a student prefers evening sessions, seeks a therapist with cross-cultural or LGBTQIA+ expertise, or simply wants a safe place to talk after hours, we founded BetterMynd to make these experiences possible every day.”
24/7 Access for Greater Flexibility and Inclusivity
Mental health support through BetterMynd is available both on-demand through a 24/7 support line as well as scheduled individual counseling sessions, giving students increased flexibility compared to conventional counseling centers, which are typically only available during business hours and when school is in session.
For individual counseling, students will also be able to select their counselor from a wide array of professionals, choosing the one they feel most comfortable with based on specialization, background, and personal preference. This flexibility makes care more inclusive and responsive to each student’s unique needs.
BetterMynd’s counselors have a minimum of a Master’s-level education, are experienced at working with college students, and specialize in working with marginalized identities, adjustment challenges, and various treatable disorders. They represent identities across the gender spectrum, sexual minorities, and racial and ethnic diversity, with more than 40% identifying as BIPOC. Critically, these counselors also have the ability to refer students to medically trained personnel or other resources in cases requiring escalation.
Looking Ahead
This transition reflects HU’s belief that mental health care should be modern, accessible, and reflect the individualized identities and needs of each student. The university will continue to work closely with BetterMynd to ensure that all students have a seamless experience and that their care is personalized, professional, and impactful.
Students who are currently receiving support through HU’s in-person services will be contacted directly and offered guidance on how to transition smoothly to the new system. The university’s Student Services Team is also available to answer any questions and provide hands-on support as needed.
“We are not stepping back from our commitment to our students’ emotional well-being,” said President Schankweiler. “By adapting our service delivery model to increase access and flexibility, we are honoring the trust our students place in us to care for their whole selves, not just their academic progress.”
