History of Harrisburg University

In the mid-1990s, a group of community business leaders recognized the value of integrating STEM education with economic development. Harrisburg University of Science and Technology was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2001, making it the first independent science and technology-focused, non-profit, university to be established in Pennsylvania in more than 100 years. It was chartered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 2005 and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 2009. Since then, Harrisburg University continued to grow. We occupy nine buildings in downtown Harrisburg, have an additional campus in Philadelphia. We also offer virtual classes worldwide! Our two main buildings in Harrisburg are located at 326 Market Street and 222 Chestnut Street.

Background Information

  • This year Harrisburg University once again provided 99% of our undergraduate students with financial assistance and scholarship support. For those that find it difficult to pay for college, HU provides significant financial aid so that funding is not a barrier to obtaining a degree. In our undergraduate programs, we focus on providing students with educational programs at an affordable price so that they can create the career path of their dreams.
  • Investing in these students means we are changing lives and positively impacting our entire region. However, as our student population grows, so does the financial aid we distribute. Over the last four years, Harrisburg University provided just shy of $40 million in financial assistance to students, and this number continues to grow steadily.
