“The best thing about the event is allowing the youth and mentors exposure to new and exciting fields of study. I loved the hands-on activities!”

HARRISBURG, PA — In July, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) hosted approximately 100 students representing Environmental Teen Corp. (ETC), a program of the Harrisburg Housing Authority now in its 10th year.

The program works to build social, spiritual, physical, financial, intellectual, and emotional health for Harrisburg teens. Students in the program engage in community cleaning projects, experience learning and career opportunities, support local businesses, and practice leadership skills and collaboration. The program is led by Clarence Watson of Steelton-Highspire School District.

During the July summer program, ETC students visited Harrisburg University in two groups. One group of 75 students engaged in a week of programming with staff and faculty from various disciplines, selecting sessions that interested them to potentially further develop that interest and visualize their future in these respective career fields.

Students this year completed programming in Advanced Manufacturing, Interactive Media, Game Design, Esports, Cybersecurity, Biotechnology, Geospatial Technology, Environmental Science, Management & eBusiness, Engineering & Math Sciences, and Forensics.

Another group of 25 completed a launchU program with HU’s Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) for three weeks, culminating in a grand finale where students presented their product or business ideas for the chance to win seed money to get their ventures off the ground.
