HARRISBURG, PA — Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) graduates continue to make an impact across industries locally and around the world. In fact, 96% of students who graduated with a bachelor’s degree reported they were employed, enrolled in graduate school, or enlisted in the military within six months of graduation.

Among them is alumnus Abd’Malik (“Malik”) Hakeem-Olowu ‘25, who earned his Bachelor of Science in Information Systems & Information Technology. During his time at HU, Malik combined rigorous coursework with hands-on experience, serving as Head Resident Assistant, leading campus organizations, and working at the IT Helpdesk, while completing an internship that led to his current role at SE&M Solutions. Today, he serves as Quantum Manager and Network Technician, overseeing complex projects, mentoring interns, and contributing to innovative solutions in the field of information systems and quantum technology.
We spoke with Malik to hear about his journey as an HU student and alumnus, from choosing Harrisburg University and exploring his field of interest to building a career and presenting at professional conferences. Here’s what he had to share.
What made you choose Harrisburg University and the Information Systems & Technology program?
When my family and I moved to Harrisburg, PA, I had just completed my final semester of high school. My counselor suggested I look into Harrisburg University, noting its strong academic reputation and generous scholarship opportunities. After some research, I felt HU would be the perfect fit to begin my college journey in a new city.
I chose the Information Systems & Technology program because I’ve always been passionate about technology, particularly computer networking. The program’s structure and concentration areas aligned perfectly with my interests and career goals.
How did your coursework or professors at HU shape your career path?
By the end of my college experience, I came to realize that higher education isn’t solely about mastering every skill in your field; it’s about exposure, exploration, and developing a foundational understanding of all aspects within your discipline. College taught me that while you might not become an expert in every area right away, you gain insight into the many “walls” or sectors of your field.
That broad exposure allows you to find your niche after graduation while still being knowledgeable about the larger ecosystem you work within. My professors encouraged that mindset, helping me connect theory to real-world applications and understand how different parts of IT intersect.
Were there any projects, internships, or hands-on experiences that prepared you for your current role?
Absolutely. My on-campus IT Helpdesk job was incredibly valuable … it gave me real-world troubleshooting and communication experience. Serving in leadership roles such as Head Resident Assistant and president of several campus clubs taught me time management, teamwork, and organizational skills. Additionally, my internship at SE&M Solutions, where I now work full-time, was instrumental in preparing me for my career.
Looking back, what’s your favorite memory from your time at HU?
My favorite memories are definitely from the “Night in Africa” events we hosted – they were filled with culture, laughter, and community. I also have fond memories of the early ASA (African Student Association) meetings; they were moments of genuine connection and belonging.
Can you tell us about your current role at SE&M Solutions? How did you get the job? What does a typical day look like?
I currently serve as Quantum Manager and Network Technician at SE&M Solutions. I started as an intern, transitioned into a part-time role, and after graduation, I was fortunate to be offered a full-time position.
A typical day for me is all about multitasking. I manage a mix of small- and large-scale projects, from developing use cases and software for our quantum devices to designing and maintaining IT architectures. I also oversee and mentor interns, helping guide their projects and professional growth. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to innovate.

You recently presented at two conferences. Could you tell us a bit more about the conference, your presentation, and your experience?
Presenting was an unforgettable experience and definitely more intense than any presentation I had done before. Although I’ve spoken in front of large audiences in the past, this time felt different. The room was filled with quantum technology experts and scientists with decades of experience, which was both intimidating and inspiring.
Representing my company added another layer of pressure, but once I began speaking, I focused on delivering value and sharing knowledge. My presentation focused on using Quantum Random Number Generators and Pseudo-Random Number Generators to create cryptographic passkeys. I noticed a few faces got lost in the more technical parts, but the majority of the audience stayed engaged. And that, to me, was a success.

What advice would you give to HU students preparing to enter the tech field?
Immerse yourself fully in your coursework … but don’t stop there! Take the initiative to build personal projects around topics that excite you. These projects will not only sharpen your skills but also serve as a portfolio that sets you apart in the job market.
Start applying for internships early, ideally in your first year, and don’t limit yourself to just one. Every experience adds to your growth.
Also, be open to starting with entry-level roles. You might not land your “dream job” right after graduation, and that’s perfectly okay. Each step, even if it’s in a different area of IT, builds the experience and perspective you’ll need to reach your ideal role. And who knows? You might even be the exception who finds it right away!
