HARRISBURG, PA — Harrisburg University of Science & Technology (HU) would like to congratulate Caitlin McGee, PT, DPT, NCS, MS, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, on publishing her fourth textbook. “Game Strong: The Science of Esports Physical Therapy” is available now through McGraw-Hill Publishing. It is also available for free to all Harrisburg University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students through HU’s AccessPhysiotherapy partnership.
“Game Strong” offers a comprehensive, evidence-based exploration of health, performance, and injury management in esports, with the aim of bridging clinical insights with the realities of competitive gaming. Beginning with an overview of esports’ unique physical demands, the text progresses through practical guidance on posture, ergonomics, and the prevention and management of common musculoskeletal issues affecting commonly injured body parts, including the forearm, wrist, hand, shoulder, and spine. The texbook also addresses tendinopathy and advanced rehabilitation programming, yielding actionable strategies for clinicians, trainers, and performance professionals. Real-world case studies in the appendix ground the content in applied practice, making the book a valuable resource for supporting the longevity, health, and peak performance of esports athletes.
“This is a very practical text,” noted Dr. McGee. “We wanted to make sure rehab clinicians could apply things straight away and have an easy guide to refer to when working with patients. But the same principles we apply in esports medicine work when looking at repetitive strain injuries across a variety of populations, from office workers to casual gamers to new moms doing more lifting than usual. I had the opportunity not only to collaborate with two experienced esports colleagues, but also with Jessica Belkowski. She’s an occupational therapist and a certified hand therapist with a lot of hand and upper extremity experience. She also happens to be my sister!”
While this isn’t the first esports medicine textbook out there, “Game Strong” focuses on PM&R (physical medicine and rehabilitation) clinicians with the aim of equipping them with the tools and skills they’ll need to treat repetitive strain injuries effectively. “The textbook draws on well-established research into pain neuroscience and tendon rehabilitation, as well as the practical experience of three of the most experienced esports medicine clinicians in the business,” added Dr. McGee.
