Harrisburg, PA – Dr. Bilita “Bili” Mattes, Executive Director of the STEM-UP Network, powered by Harrisburg University of Science Technology (HU), has won the 2024 Business Woman of the Year Award. This nomination highlights her remarkable contributions to both Harrisburg University and the broader community.

Dr. Mattes has been recognized for embodying exceptional leadership qualities that span all facets of her life. According to the nomination, “Bili’s contributions have not only elevated the STEM-UP Network but have also made a lasting impact on the community and the advancement of women in STEM fields.” Previously, Dr. Mattes was named a 2019 Woman of Influence by Central Penn Business Journal.

Dr. Mattes joined Harrisburg University in 2007 and served as Provost and Chief Academic Officer until fall 2023. STEM-UP was founded in 2011. Under Dr. Mattes’ leadership, STEM-UP has grown its ranks by hundreds of members and continued to outperform national averages for women and minority students in STEM. She was also instrumental in the creation of HU’s research centers, such as the Government Technology Institute, the Security Center of Excellence, and the Center for Environment, Energy, and Economy.

When asked about her inspiration and guidance, Bili expressed her admiration for Dale Carnegie, stating, “Dale Carnegie has been my role model since I was in my 20s.” Her dedication to Carnegie’s principles is evident, as she became a certified Dale Carnegie Instructor and taught his courses for over a decade. Bili’s approach to focusing on human relations and authenticity has profoundly influenced her and those around her — both personally and professionally.

The Business Woman of the Year Award recognizes outstanding leaders who are making significant contributions to their fields while inspiring the next generation of women to achieve their ambitions. The award winner was formally announced at the 2024 Business Women’s Forum, hosted by the Carlisle and West Shore Chambers of Commerce, on May 15, 2024.
