HU Next Generation Technologies lead professor Dr. Farooq Anjum recently discussed the rapid rise of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with FOX43 news.

NFTs are digital assets that are spiking in value. Non-fungible means it’s unique and can’t be replaced with something else. They are comparable to super rare trading cards one couldn’t find anywhere else, versus a bitcoin, which one could trade for another identical bitcoin.

FOX43 asked Anjum whether there are measures in place to prevent one from downloading valuable NFTs for free.

“There is no concept of ownership in the digital world, if you think about it,” he said.

Still, the value of an NFT stems from owning the original file, Anjum said.

“It’s like you owning the Mona Lisa as opposed to you looking at the Mona Lisa,” he said.
