HARRISBURG, PA – The Harrisburg University community is mourning the passing of Rocco (“Rocky”) Ortenzio. Ortenzio was a healthcare trailblazer and a philanthropist with big plans for the region and an even bigger heart. Even though he always took the long view and saw the big picture in everything he touched, Ortenzio never lost sight of what matters the most, right at home.

Born in 1932, his history spanned several world-changing events – a perspective which almost certainly helped inform his spirit of generosity and his desire to build a brighter future for all.

Following his educations at Harrisburg Catholic High School (now Bishop McDevitt), West Chester University (then West Chester College), and the University of Pennsylvania, Ortenzio used his talents for clinical excellence and business acumen to establish four Central PA healthcare companies over six decades. Most notably, he was the co-founder of Select Medical, one of just two Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the region.

Ortenzio has been bringing his philanthropic instincts to bear in the heart of Harrisburg for decades. At Harrisburg University, his financial and cultural contributions helped build the very foundations of what Harrisburg University has and will continue to become. The Ortenzio Learning Center at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology will continue to bear his name in gratitude and in perpetuity. In 2024, Select Medical reconfirmed its partnership with HU with a five-year, $5 million gift to establish the Select Medical Physical Therapy and Movement Institute.

“Rocco cared very much about Harrisburg City and Central Pennsylvania,” said Harrisburg University President, Eric Darr, PhD. “Our community came to understand his great interest in giving young people an opportunity through education. We need more people to support education in Harrisburg and our region the way Rocco did.”

Darr continued, “Rocky was a visionary philanthropist whose unwavering commitment to education has left an indelible impact on the Harrisburg University community. His generosity and dedication provided young people with opportunities to pursue their dreams and shape brighter futures, inspiring generations to reach their full potential. Through his investments in education, he fostered a legacy that will continue to uplift our community for years to come.”

Ortenzio passed away on October 26 surrounded by his loved ones. Surviving him is his wife, Nancy; his sons, Bob, John, and Marty; his 12 grandchildren; and his 13 great-grandchildren. Ortenzio was 91 years old.

Visitation for Rocco Ortenzio will be held on October 31, 9:00 AM–11:00 AM, at The Cathedral of St. Patrick at 212 State Street in Harrisburg. A funeral mass will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bishop McDevitt High School, with memorial trees also available.
