HARRISBURG, PA – Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) has signed an agreement with the Pennsylvania Department of the Auditor General (AG) to offer significant tuition discounts to AG employees and their dependents.

HU believes STEM education is a powerful catalyst for personal and societal growth and that learning is a lifelong pursuit. Following previous agreements to provide tuition discounts to employees of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (COPA) and the PA State Senate, this brand-new memorandum of understanding with the AG is the latest effort by Harrisburg University to make higher education more accessible and affordable for Pennsylvania residents, no matter their age, position, or experience.

Under this new agreement, eligible employees of the Department of the Auditor General will receive the following discounts on Harrisburg University undergraduate degree programsgraduate degree programs, and certificates:

  • For Commonwealth employees: A 25-percent discount off the full tuition rate for on-campus graduate degree programs and master’s certificates.
  • For dependents of Commonwealth employees: A 10-percent discount off the full tuition rate for on-campus graduate degree programs and master’s certificates.
  • For Commonwealth employees and their dependents: A 10-percent discount off the full tuition rate for online undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Harrisburg University to reduce financial barriers and support the academic and professional aspirations of learners across the state. Access and equity have been primary tenets of HU’s mission since its founding in 2001. This mirrors Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s efforts to boost higher education spending, thereby lowering costs and improving degree acquisition in the Commonwealth.

“We feel privileged and validated to have such close working relationships with the leadership of our Commonwealth,” said Kevin Purcell, Ph.D., Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Harrisburg University. “The fact that Auditor General Timothy DeFoor is an alumnus of Harrisburg University, and a longstanding supporter and friend of our institution, makes this milestone even more meaningful for us. From sponsoring our annual Financial Literacy Essay Competition to ensuring Pennsylvania’s financial apparatus runs smoothly, PA residents have benefited for years from Auditor General DeFoor’s commitment to education, financial literacy, and fiscal responsibility.”

Dr. Purcell continued, “STEM education is a powerful resource that benefits all of us. The skills learned while conducting research and studying mathematics, science, and technology, pay off throughout life and empower our institutions. Today, graduate degree programs in STEM fields are especially critical to sustaining societal progress and economic growth. Pennsylvania is quickly becoming a national leader in emerging markets – including advanced agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, robotics, and others. Partnerships like this help us sustain that momentum for the betterment of all.”

Auditor General Timothy DeFoor added, “We are transforming our department to provide our auditors with the best training and education available to get the best results for Pennsylvania taxpayers. This relationship will help our team access quality education and create career pathways for the future leadership of this department. As an alumnus of Harrisburg University, I am excited to see this relationship grow and give our best and brightest the opportunity for career growth.”

Auditor General DeFoor also shared his thoughts about the time he spent at Harrisburg University and the value STEM education provides for our governmental institutions and those called to public service.

The tuition discount program is available to employees of the Department of the Auditor General who meet the eligibility criteria, including new and returning students. The discount applies to a range of HU’s undergraduate and graduate programs, allowing students to pursue their passions and career goals while reducing the cost of tuition.

“Harrisburg University’s ongoing commitment to professional development is evident through this agreement,” added Kelly Powell Logan, HU’s Vice President for Strategic Workforce Development and University Centers. “HU’s strategic locations in the heart of Harrisburg’s Capitol Complex and the City of Philadelphia, along with its flexible online learning options, provide support and convenience for government employees balancing work and life with academic pursuits.”

In addition to this tuition discount, HU offers a variety of financial aid and support services to help students succeed academically and personally.
