HARRISBURG, PA — What goes into designing a course about designing games?

In the latest episode of The Game Design Thread — a recurring series on Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s (HU) IMPACT Podcast — host Dr. Greg Loring-Albright welcomes Professor Anthony Ortega for a conversation about tabletop game design, teaching, and the development of a course they co-teach each fall.

The episode offers a look at how the course came together and the ideas behind its development, while also drawing on the instructors’ own experiences as tabletop game designers.

Dr. Loring-Albright serves as the program lead for the Bachelor of Science in Game Design and teaches in HU’s Game Design and Interactive Media programs. His research explores game design, games as media, and games for social change, and he is also a published designer of board games, role-playing games, and real-world games.

Professor Ortega is a production coordinator for HU’s Center for Advanced Entertainment and Learning Technologies and a faculty member in the Game Design and Interactive Media programs. In addition to producing the IMPACT Podcast, he teaches courses in game prototyping and tabletop game development and has led game development workshops in a variety of settings.
