Charles Palmer, Harrisburg University Interactive Media Professor, recently joined CBS21 news to discuss connecting electronic devices to vehicles and how those vehicles store your digital information.
Palmer and other experts say that cars collect and store the information of those who connect phones to vehicles via Bluetooth or USB.
“I plug my phone in or I use Bluetooth and connect to my phone and decide I’m going to go hands-free and make a phone call. You might have access to your contacts. You might have emails,” says Palmer, Executive Director of HU’s Center for Advanced Entertainment and Learning Technologies. “But that really means that device then might have access to that information. Not that it’s doing anything with it but that it’s storing it there.”
When users disconnect from Bluetooth or unplug their phones, experts said their information remains in the vehicles, according to the report. This becomes a problem when users want to sell their vehicles or connect their devices to a rental vehicle. Multiple studies have shown that rental cars have stored the personal information of dozens of people, the story said.
