A new Harrisburg University (HU) and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Schools of Nursing agreement guarantees the acceptance of nursing school graduates into HU’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

Through the agreement, UPMC students who are scheduled to and/or have completed a hospital-based nursing diploma program, and/or passed the NCLEX licensing exam, will be accepted into Harrisburg University’s BSN program. Students from UPMC Schools of Nursing, including Shadyside School of Nursing, Mercy School of Nursing, St. Margaret School of Nursing, and Jameson School of Nursing, are eligible thanks to the agreement.

“We are thrilled to partner with the UPMC Schools of Nursing to provide this opportunity to students,” said Harrisburg University President, Dr. Eric Darr. “This agreement will provide nursing students a seamless transfer into HU’s Bachelor of Science nursing program and will help provide healthcare employers the trained and educated nurses they need.”

HU’s BSN program is an 18-month online program that builds on prior education and experience as a registered nurse with an associate degree or hospital diploma.

Students combine academic coursework with professional practice while completing the program. Coursework in evidence-based practice and science not only prepares students to meet every employer expectation for a BSN, but also preps nurses for a future graduate program. The practicum components include an emphasis on advocacy and provides students opportunities to gain practical experience in special interest areas.

“Harrisburg University’s RN to BSN program will allow the working nurse to maintain full-time employment while earning his/her BSN. The nurses will be able to immediately apply what they are learning to improve their practice and enhance patient care,” said Linda Kmetz, Ph.D., RN Executive Director, UPMC Schools of Nursing, Director, UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing.
