With the COVID-19 pandemic escalating and the holiday shopping season upon us, there are opportunists who use computers to snag hot online merchandise in hopes of re-selling the items at much higher prices.

Opportunists use ‘bot’ computer programs that literally act as robots to buy up hot merchandise like the hugely popular Play Station 5 video game console.

Harrisburg University Cybersecurity Professor, Ron Jones, spoke with WGAL News 8 about the use of bots. There is nothing illegal about the practice, but

“The legit bot resellers use real credit cards, go out and buy the items and then turn around and resell them on one of the open markets,” Jones said.
