Harrisburg University’s Student Union is a place where students drop in to find resources and feel comfortable asking student success team members questions.

While they currently can’t do that in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they still can access the same services and resources online since HU recently launched the Virtual Student Union (VSU).

The VSU is a resource embedded as a course in the dashboard of HU’s Learning Management System, Canvas. All enrolled undergraduate students have the VSU on their Canvas dashboard. And by simply clicking on the course, they land on the course landing page. The landing page has all campus functional areas listed.

A student must click on the functional area to learn more, access resources, or schedule an appointment. Some of the functional area landing spots have links to additional resources such as MyHU or Sharepoint. Staff and faculty also have access to the VSU as well to help direct students to campus resources and services.

“We created the VSU because, while on campus, students would drop in to ask questions to the student success team in the Student Union,” said Melissa Morgan, Director of Student Services. “In response to our virtual environment, we wanted to create a similar “one-stop shop” for students to access resources in a familiar format.”

The development of the VSU was made possible via a collaboration driven by the Office of Student Services and other functional areas. The Assistant Director of Student Success, Aaron Rock, built the site but collaborated with all other student-facing functional areas and the entire Office of Student Services to gather resources and information, Morgan said.

“Hopefully, students and HU employees will know where to go to start connecting with campus resources,” she said. “We also hope to keep the community connected during these virtual times.
