HARRISBURG, PA – Earlier this month, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) hosted the second annual Game Design Showcase: an evening dedicated to the work of students in HU’s Bachelor of Science in Game Design program. More than 30 faculty, students, alumni, and guests filled the JPL Digital Media Lab for student presentations, refreshments, and gameplay.

This year’s showcase marked a quiet milestone for the still-young program: every undergraduate cohort was represented, from incoming first-years to students preparing to graduate this spring. Each student or team gave a short presentation about their game’s development before the event shifted into open play, with every featured title available to try on the Media Lab’s computers.

Highlighted projects this year included:

  • “If/Else” by Khaliq Hatmal ’27: A card game that drew industry attention when HU students brought it to PAX Unplugged in December.
  • “A Kitten in the City” by Chloe Miller ’29: A pixel-art adventure about a cat searching the streets for its siblings.
  • “Dungeon” by Zach Goldman ’27: A retro dungeon crawler that pays homage to the genre’s classics.
  • “Ballots & Honey” by Greg Devoney ’26: A 3D puzzle-platformer with a satirical political twist.

Beyond the games themselves, the showcase doubles as a professional-development exercise. Students practice public speaking, networking, and the give-and-take of design feedback: skills essential to a game design career.

The Game Design program is one of Harrisburg University’s newest and fastest-growing undergraduate programs. Career possibilities go far beyond AAA game development, encompassing narrative, gameplay, and level design; assets and animation; indie game publishing; customer and community support; gamified application design; and even making games to help with counseling and therapy.
