Biography
John Carter McKnight, MIA, JD, PhD
Assistant Professor, Sociology of Emerging Technologies
Dr. John Carter McKnight is an Assistant Professor in the Human-Centered Interaction Design Program (HCID), where he teaches a broad range of courses from the Introductory course to the Capstone. His goal is to ensure the growth and excellence of HCID, along with expanding its course offerings to meet the needs of its diverse cadre of graduate students.
He has taught at HU since 2016, first in the General Education Program, where he pioneered games and simulations in the social science classroom, as Principal Investigator of SimGlobal, recipient of two Presidential Research Grants from the University, and as an instructor and member of the Board of Directors of the Reacting Consortium, developers of immersive classroom simulation systems for the humanities.
Prior to obtaining his PhD, Dr. McKnight worked for over a decade as an attorney specializing in financing high-technology companies, in New York City, Beverly Hills, and Silicon Valley. He has been an officer and director of STEM-related nonprofit organizations, including The Mars Society and the Space Frontier Foundation, was briefly CEO of a startup spacesuit design firm, and holds a NASA certification in planetary protection as well as International Committee of the Red Cross certification in international humanitarian law.
Dr. McKnight has taught and guest lectured in the US, the UK, and Denmark, and presented papers at the British Royal Society, Oxford University, the European Parliament, San Diego Comic-Con, and an English pub. His publications include work on the ethics of social robots, governance issues in long-term spaceflight, and sociocultural issues of peer-to-peer personal finance systems.
