Julie Doxsee, Ph.D Associate Professor of English and Program Lead for GENED
Dr. Julie Doxsee joined the faculty at Harrisburg University as Associate Professor of English in 2019 after three years as Assistant Professor of English at Central Penn College. Before moving to Central Pennsylvania in 2016, Dr. Doxsee spent nine years teaching in the Academic Writing Program, Communications Program, and Comparative Literature Program at Koc University in Istanbul, Türkiye. Throughout a 24-year career in academia, she has taught multi-genre creative writing courses, creative arts and performance, science and technical writing, writing for business, writing for the social sciences, research methods, advanced project-based writing, and American and global literature to undergraduates and graduate students.
At Koc University, Dr. Doxsee helped develop a graduate writing curriculum for scholars entering discipline-specific global communities as well as serving as Director of Academic Writing and Co-coordinator of the Communications Program. Additionally, before the recent dissolution of the 30+ year Civil Society Leadership Award grant program through Open Society Foundations, she worked with graduate scholars from autocratic countries on academic projects ranging from Mediterranean refugee migratory routes, child soldier recruitment in the MENA region, and women’s reproductive health in Sudan. The OSF scholar program involved integrated learning communities in Madaba, Jordan (2019) and virtually (2020).
Beyond her international career in teaching academic writing, ELL/EFL writing, instructional design, creative writing, and literature, Dr. Doxsee is an actively publishing poet and nonfiction author. Reviewers have referred to her poetry “a series of fun-house mirrors” and “loops and knots of iron that hold the secrets to their allure in underlying geometrical patterns.”
At Harrisburg University, Dr. Doxsee is Program Lead for the General Education program, in which she teaches English/Communication and other interdisciplinary courses. She is a CITI certified IRB Member, and was Vice Chair of the Technology Across the Curriculum Committee from 2022-2024.
