Mar 9, 2010
Two area high school students each received one-year full-tuition awards to Harrisburg University of Science and Technology for their exhibits during the 53rd annual Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair (CASEF).
· Patrick Vares, grade 11 at Lower Dauphin High School, came in second place in the Computer Science category for his experiment “Rubik’s on 83”.
· Faith Elmes, grade 11 at West Perry High School, came in second place for her experiment, “The Effect of Sulfuric Acid in Soil on the Germination Rate of Grass."
The students each received The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology Scholar Award. To redeem this award, the recipients must be granted a regular, full-time admission to Harrisburg University for the fall semester immediately preceding graduation from high school with a minimum 3.30 GPA.
Vares and Elmes were among the 270 students exhibiting in one of 15 categories at the CASEF, which encourages students to creatively explore and investigate their world through hands-on scientific research.
As the only science, technology, engineering, and mathematics focused university located between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Harrisburg University believes that participating in the fair enriches each student’s appreciation and knowledge of the important roles science and engineering play in modern society.
The event was held at the Whitaker Science Center and was sponsored by Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, The Carlisle Sentinel, Penn State Harrisburg, Wilson College, Messiah College, Shippensburg University, Penn State College of Medicine, Harrisburg Area Community College, and Whitaker Science Center. CASEF held judging Thursday, March 4 and Friday, March 5 and had its annual awards ceremony Saturday, March 6.
