Overview

  • Use advanced Internet search techniques to identify, evaluate and manage web-based information.
  • Manage digital assets for efficient archiving and easy reference.
  • Use self-support and technology troubleshooting techniques.
  • Follow ethical and legal guidelines for the access and use of digital assets.
  • Consider privacy and security guidelines as a digital citizen.
  • Final Project: Create a learning solution to teach the importance of digital literacy skills.

Course Description

LTMS 580 (Special Topics in Learning Technologies): The course addresses the evolving digital landscape and the new skills required to be literate in today’s information technology age. Digitally literate people can be more productive, communicate more efficiently and manage information flow in high-technology, dispersed environments. Students in the course will develop skills in information search, management and ownership. Computer security, technology troubleshooting and teaching others digital literacy skills will also be explored within the context of discussing digital technology’s impact on learning, work and life.

Sue Sheffer recently retired from the Central York School District where she spent 38 years, 20 of them as the district technology support teacher and Classrooms for the Future Coach. In her position, she conducted professional development and supported teachers as they infused technology into their classrooms. She has her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Shippensburg University.

Reference & Instruction Librarian, Harrisburg Area Community College

Corrine Syster has been a librarian working in higher education for three years. She has a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from The Pennsylvania State University and a Master's in Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Corrine is passionate about preparing students to interact with the digital world and giving them the tools necessary to successfully manage online information. Corrine has presented at national and local conferences on technology and gaming in education.
