Academic Success in the Learning Commons

Your success as a student is a priority, and we are committed to making opportunities and resources available to you. Academic Success Services are provided in the Learning Commons as support for students to perform to the best of their abilities. Browse this page to learn more about the array of services and programs we provide.

SMARTHINKING

SMARTHINKING is an online tutoring service that is free to all Harrisburg University students. Students receive live one-on-one sessions with a professional tutor in an array of subjects. The opportunity to submit an essay with questions for professional feedback within 24 hours is also available along with an extensive collection of academic resources available at any time for students to reference.

One-on-One Advising

Individual student advising is provided to students throughout their enrollment at the University. This advising is focused on academic success strategies such as time management, study skills, career aptitude, decision making, and goal setting. Students facing obstacles outside the realm of academics will be assisted and referred to the appropriate services.

Model Student Program

Students in specified introductory level courses will have the opportunity to study with a model student who has mastered the course material and is trained as a student tutor. The model student accompanies the other students in all the activities of the course. He or she guides study groups through the tasks of reviewing class notes, managing study time, using proper study skills, and planning for the timely completion of assigned coursework.

Group Study Sessions

The Learning Commons provides space for students to meet in groups to study for specific classes and complete group projects. Regularly scheduled group study sessions occur weekly and bi-weekly, led by an assigned tutor or model student.

Tutoring Program

Individual tutors are available in all subjects and are scheduled upon the request of students or faculty members. Students do not need a referral to receive tutoring. Many of the best students will request tutoring in order to ensure their mastery of course material or in preparation for graduate school entrance exams.

Technology Literacy Program

Students who wish to increase their technology skills are able to choose from an array of computer literacy tutorials provided by individual tutors and partnerships with local organizations.

Academic Enrichment Program

Students who wish to enhance their basic academic skills such as math, reading, writing, and time-management may complete tutorials monitored by the Academic and Student Life Advisor.

Professional Development Program

Students seeking to cultivate their interviewing, networking or communication skills, explore their career aptitude, or refine their professional etiquette are encouraged to make use of the many resources and tutorials available to them through the Academic Success Center. Students can participate in industry partnerships, clubs, shadowing, and mentoring, too.

Business Mentor Program

Students have the opportunity to be paired with a Business Mentor. Business Mentors are successful professionals in the local community who guide students through their University careers while helping them to build a network of professional contacts in their respective fields.

University Seminars

The University Seminars aim to empower students by providing resources and instruction that will enable students to maximize their time at the University. Weekly classroom instruction and regularly scheduled extra-curricular activities provide opportunities for students to pursue and develop healthy habits and skills while becoming familiar with university and professional life.

Campus Toolkit

A web-based retention tool, Campus Toolkit is utilized in the general education curriculum. The ‘toolkit’ contains among other tools; assessments, knowledge modules, and links to external resources that assist students in their studies, in their personal lives and in their career choices. It also provides a means of communication between students, their faculty advisors and student services professionals.
