Social Media Summit 2011

The 2011 Social Media Summit brought together a group of world-class speakers to address a diverse group of topics that examined the far-reaching impact of social networks on politics, parenting, entrepreneurship, training and education, world affairs, and the local news. This event attracted parents, budding journalists, corporate leaders, advocates, non-profit groups, military personnel, HR directors and managers, business owners, college students and others who wish to think about the impact of social media beyond marketing and brand building.

Using Social Networks for Training and Education

April Barton is the Assistant Dean for Academic Computing at Villanova University School of Law where she is responsible for establishing the law school's academic technology strategy and implementing technologies that enhance the teaching, learning and scholarship processes. Formerly, Dean Barton served as an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection in the Division of Marketing Practices. Prior to joining the FTC, Dean Barton served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Villanova University School of Law where she taught Computer Law, First Amendment and Regulation in Cyberspace, the Legislative and Administrative Process (Clinic), and Digital Law. At Villanova, Dean Barton also served as the Faculty Director of the Global Democracy Project (GDP), a program dedicated to advancing the development of civil societies and promoting the rule of law through Internet technology.

Jeff Cobb is founder and managing director of Tagoras, a research and consulting firm that helps organizations increase the reach, revenue, and impact of their continuing education programs. He is co-author of three major research reports on education and technology - Association E-learning: State of the Sector, Association Learning Management Systems, and Association Virtual Conferences – and he speaks frequently on emerging trends in technology, business, and education. His book Shift Ed: A Call to Action for Transforming K-12 Education, written with futurist David Houle, was published by Corwin in March 2011.

Jennifer Ellis, JD, is a consultant with Freedman Consulting, which assists PA law firms with a full range of issues on the business side of the practice. She concentrates her consulting in marketing, technology, the intersection of technology and ethics, client development, and teaching attorneys how to make effective use of technology to obtain better leverage and enhance profitability. She also helps firms create a Social Media presence and engage in research to assist in utilization of Social Media data in background research or during the discovery process. Previously, she served as Associate Director of Media Technologies with the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, where she was employed from 1999 through 2011.

Jim Gates began teaching in 1971 as a music teacher. In 1983 he began teaching high school computer classes. He has taught computer classes from grades k-12, and now in a graduate level course at Harrisburg University. Among his accomplishments are the 2007 Edublogs award fro the Best Resource Sharing Blog. He has won National Gold and Bronze awards for a column he wrote for Child Guide Magazine. He was presented with the 2009 Pioneer Award by the PA Educational Communications and Technology (PAECT). And, his blog was listed by the Top Online University Review as one of the Top 50 Blogs for E-learning Tools and Tips. He worked as a Mentor in the Classrooms for the Future program and consults under the name of GatesIdeas - gatesideas.

Paula Ketter is the editor of ASTD periodicals and oversees the publication of ASTD’s flagship monthly magazine T+D (Training + Development). In her role as editor, Paula works with thought leaders and learning and development practitioners, sharing best practices and cutting-edge developments that are changing the training profession. The growth of social learning (the use of social media tools to deliver learning and development initiatives) is one of the trends revolutionizing the field. Paula is a veteran journalist with more than 25 years of experience writing and editing for newspapers and magazines. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College of Journalism.

Dr. Sherrie A. Madia is author of the bestselling book, The Online Job Search Survival Guide. A social network strategy expert and consultant to organizations, she is Director of Communications at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and serves on the Advisory Board of EyeCatcher Digital, a electronic media strategy and marketing firm. With fellow social media strategist Paul Borgese, she is coauthor of the critically acclaimed book, The Social Media Survival Guide: Everything You Need to Know to Grow Your Business Exponentially with Social Media (Second Edition).

Ira S. Wolfe is a prolific author, columnist, business blogger and sought-after-expect on hiring and workplace trends. He is the author of the new book Geeks, Geezers, and Googlization: How to Manage the Unprecedented Convergence of the Wired, the Tired, and Technology in the Workplace. He is an international speaker on current and future workforce trends, generational crowding, skilled worker gaps, and best practices in hiring and succession. His other books include The Perfect Labor Storm 2.0, The Perfect Labor Storm Fact Book, Understanding Business Values and Motivators, and Coming Job Boom. He is president of Success Performance Solutions and managing partner of Social Media Architects of Delmarva.

Social Media & Legal Issues for Employers

Social media is a fact of life for millions of people, so the real question is not whether we connect, but where and in what ways we should connect to benefit from online networking’s pluses and avoid its minuses. The proliferation of social media is changing us, raising questions for lawmakers/policy makers/educators and parents alike. With more than 500 million active users (the size of a small country) and growing fast, many of the legal issues with social networking such as Facebook are still relatively unsettled. Our panel will discuss how far employers can and should go to guide employees’ social networking activities to prevent or reduce problems.

Michael McAuliffe Miller, Member, Eckert Seamans. Michael concentrates his practice exclusively on management-side employment and labor law including employment and labor-related litigation before a variety of state and federal courts.

Adam L. Santucci is an Associate in the McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC Labor and Employment Law Practice Group. Adam represents public and private sector employers, providing advice and counseling on a wide range of labor and employment law issues. Adam regularly represents and counsels unionized employers in all aspects of labor relations including collective bargaining and labor arbitration, and non-unionized employers on union avoidance. Adam also represents and counsels both unionized and non-unionized employers with respect to all aspects of employment law. Adam frequently conducts training for clients and participates in several speaking engagements each year. Adam's recent speaking engagements have focused on issues related to social media in the workplace. Adam is also a regular contributor to the McNees labor and employment law blog.

Thomas D. Rees is a Partner with High Swartz, LLP in Norristown, Pennsylvania, where he heads the firm's Litigation and Employment Practice. He focuses his practice primarily on employment law, where he represents employers in litigations over employment terminations; restrictive covenants, trade secrets, and other employee mobility issues; employment discrimination and sexual harassment matters; employment contract disputes; and defamation and privacy related matters.

Cory Winter is an attorney with Saul Ewing LLP's Harrisburg office and is a member of the Firm's Higher Education Practice Group. In that capacity, Cory provides legal services to several colleges, universities, community colleges, and other schools. Cory advises his clients on many issues impacting institutions of higher education, including Title IX and sexual misconduct, Title IV federal student aid, information security, FERPA, student affairs policy drafting and enforcement, and additional compliance-related matters. Cory has written and presented on issues concerning Title IX, social media, and compliance issues. Cory is also a member of Saul Ewing's Litigation Department.

Texting is replacing phone conversations and social networking websites reign supreme. In an instant, people across the world can be connected to each other. Join a panel of experts as they discuss the legal issues—from sexting to cyber bullying--that can arise from children and social networking.

Dr. Simon Casey, is the author of his new book Secrets to Emotional Wealth and the founder and CEO of Emotional Mastery International. Emotions expert, therapist, and health care consultant to many organizations, he is the director of MedLink Treatment Centers in California. Over 25 years of experience in the field of mental health, Dr. Casey established and directed many inpatient & outpatient treatment facilities for adults as well as adolescents. He regularly lectures on drug abuse, bullying and the negative impacts on social networking at many schools and colleges. Currently; Dr. Casey provides services for MADD, Cystic Fibrosis and Muscular Dystrophy Foundations.

Dr. Alfred Mueller II is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. A former Fulbright Scholar in Armenia and former Executive Director of the Eastern Communication Association, Dr. Mueller’s areas of interest include public and mediated communication. Having spent over eighteen years teaching communication theories and principles in the classroom, Dr. Mueller has earned several awards for teaching and for research. His professional interest in cyberbullying emerged from his own efforts to help his daughter, who became a target of a cyberbully.

Linda Fogg Phillips is the mother of eight children ages 13 to 27 and is the Facebook Expert for parents and educators. She has written two books, Facebook for Parents, Answers to the Top 25 Question and The Facebook Guide for Parents. Linda taught the course Facebook for Parents offered through the Persuasive Technology Lab at Stanford University. Facebook considers Linda to be their regular consultant in the field of education. She was commissioned by Facebook to be the lead author for the Facebook for Educators Guide, which can be found in Facebook’s Family Safety Center and on facebookforeducators.org. Linda has been featured as the Facebook Expert on ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN. She has a bi-weekly TV segment on Fox in Las Vegas. She is also interviewed and published internationally as well as nationally. Linda presents keynote talks and hands-on workshops to schools and organizations.

Izzy Neiss is the VP of User Engagement at kids’ social media platform Everloop. She is a published author with more than 15 years experience working with children of all ages and 10 years tenure participating in social networking communities. Izzy has extensive knowledge of online media, social networking and pop culture. Her expertise is in youth media, virtual spaces and safety for kids ages 8 - 14.

Social Media and Political Change

Social media's influence in organizing protests and change throughout the Middle East is at the forefront of international news. Political advocacy groups are no longer sitting on the sidelines when it comes to social media. In today’s social media age, any issue advocacy or public affairs campaign that relies solely on traditional media and paid advertising simply will not succeed. Advocacy groups understand this new reality and are actively using platforms like Twitter and Facebook to educate, connect and mobilize their members and stakeholders and to focus the lens through which legislators, policy makers and regulators view their key issues. Join members of the media, authors and political change experts for a discussion on how social media and cyber dissent are bringing about political change both here and abroad.

David La Torre is a well-regarded public affairs consultant and public speaker who has served as a media strategist and public spokesperson for a number of high-profile clients. His client list covers a wide array of companies and organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Police, Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and the Meadows Racetrack and Casino. He has been a public speaker, providing counsel and perspective, for a number of organizations, including PANPHA, the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors and Corrections USA. He recently spoke in Budapest, Hungary at an international public affairs conference. David began a career in public service under Gov. Tom Ridge, serving in the communications office as a spokesman and chief speechwriter. David was later named Press Secretary to Gov. Mark S. Schweiker. As Press Secretary, he directed communications for the sixth-largest state in the nation and successfully handled an international press corps during the July 2002 dramatic rescue of nine miners at Quecreek, Somerset County.

Joyce M. Davis is an award-winning journalist and internationally acclaimed author who has lived and worked around the globe. She is former foreign correspondent and foreign editor for National Public Radio and Knight Ridder Newspapers, once the second-largest newspaper chain in the United States. Ms. Davis specializes in foreign affairs and the media, and has written extensively on terrorism, national security and Islam. From 2003-2007, Ms. Davis was Associate Director of Broadcasting for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Prague, Czech Republic. In her senior role at the international broadcasting agency, Ms. Davis supervised radio and internet services to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the countries of Central Asia. She was a leading voice in providing news and information to Iran through Radio Farda (tomorrow) and has reported from the country as well as from much of the Middle East. Ms. Davis has received numerous awards and distinguished fellowships, including senior fellowships with the United States Institute of Peace, Journalists in Europe based in Paris, and the Salzburg Seminar in Austria. Ms. Davis has spoken at such respected institutions as the U.S. Naval Academy, the National Security Agency and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. She is regularly called to serve as television and radio host and moderator, and has appeared on CNN International, the BBC as well as on Fox News.

Social Networks and the Military

Social media websites have long been a point of conflict in the military. On the one hand, they allow deployed service members to stay in touch with their loved ones, as well as allow commanders to spread information quickly. But then there's the issue of security. Join us for a panel of social media experts as they discuss how the military uses social media and what civilian communication professionals can learn from their military counterparts.

Sue Hoppin is the founder and president of the National Military Spouse Network, a professional development and networking organization supporting military spouses who must balance their own dreams and ambitions with the military lifestyle. In 2007, Sue co-authored, "A Family's Guide to the Military" for the popular Dummies series. Before founding the NMSN, Sue served as the first deputy director for spouse outreach for the Military Officers Association of America, charged with creating and spearheading military spouse initiatives for the 370,000 member association. In recognition of her accomplishments, Military Spouse Magazine named Sue on both their 2007 and 2008 Who's Who of Military Spouses list recognizing those who have made significant contributions in the military community for all military spouses; making her the only person to be named on the list two years in a row. Sue holds a bachelor's degree in international studies from the University of Denver and a master's degree in international relations from the University of Oklahoma.

Eric Sauve is Vice President, Corporate Development, NewsGator Technologies. Eric is a leading expert on Enterprise collaboration, learning and social technologies. Eric has worked with private and public sector organizations to help them make next generation Internet approaches a reality in their organization and drive meaningful business results. Eric is the former CEO and Co-founder of Tomoye, which is widely deployed across Federal and Military organizations. Professor Dennis Murphy currently serves as the Director of the Information in Warfare Group at Center for Strategic Leadership, U.S. Army War College where he teaches information operations and strategic communication elective courses and conducts workshops focused on the information element of power. Previously, Professor Murphy served in a variety of command and staff positions over his 27 years of U.S. Army service to include command of a direct support artillery battalion forward deployed to Germany and an associate professorship at West Point. Professor Murphy was appointed as the first George C. Marshall Fellow for Political-Military and Diplomatic Gaming at the Department of State's Foreign Service Institute in 1999. His work in information operations (IO) and strategic communication includes a tour as senior observer-trainer for the Battle Command Training Program, Operations Group Delta (Joint Task Force and Combatant Command trainers) where he trained NATO multinational forces on IO prior their initial deployment to Bosnia. He has written on information operations, strategic communication, new media, and national security issues and published in numerous professional outlets. Several recent articles include “Attack or Defend? Leveraging Information and Balancing Risk in Cyberspace” which appears in the May-June 2010 edition of Military Review and “In Search of the Art and Science of Strategic Communication,” published in the Winter, 2010 edition of Parameters.

Social Networks and the Life Sciences

In the life sciences industry, social networks are already improving applications such as market research, physician relations, clinical trials, and medical education and are demonstrating utility beyond mere marketing channels, but as powerful tools that have the potential to –combined with the right application – add value. This panel discuss will examine the impact of social networks on the life sciences industry.

Dr. Daniel R. George teaches in the Department of Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine. He earned his Ph.D and M.Sc in medical anthropology from Oxford University and his BA from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Along with the internationally respected geriatric neurologist Dr. Peter Whitehouse of Case Western Reserve University, Dr. George is co-author of The Myth of Alzheimer's: What You Aren't Being Told About Today's Most Dreaded Diagnosis, which was published by St. Martin's Press in 2008. He and Dr. Whitehouse regularly update their blog at www.themythofalzheimers.com/blog and welcome any and all comments. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. George is serving as the director of the Farmers Market in Hershey, which he co-founded last June. Dr. George is interested in the many ways in which social media is being used as a means of promoting health and wellness in contemporary medicine.

John F. Kouten is founder and CEO of JFK Communications, Inc. and is founder and President of BioCore Medical Communications, LLC. Mr. Kouten is a 20-year veteran in life sciences PR and marketing communications. Prior to forming these agencies, Mr. Kouten rose through the Public Affairs ranks of Sanofi-Aventis, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Johnson & Johnson over a span of nearly 15 years. Since 2004 Mr. Kouten has been focused on building JFK Communications and BioCore. Mr. Kouten has presented at various PR and medical marketing conferences, including PRSA, BIO NJ and PA BIO; has published in a number of life science trade publications, including Pharmaceutical Executive, Product Management Today and Communiqué; and contributes regularly to his own healthcare PR blog www.jfkhealth.com/Healthcare-PR-Blog/ . Unplugged: Disconnecting from Social Media

Harrisburg University made news around the globe with it blocked social media sites for a week and surveyed student and faculty reactions. Professors at other universities and colleges have done similar exercises as have many K-12 educators. Join a panel of educators and authors as they discuss social media addiction and the benefits and drawbacks of unplugging from social networks.

Nicole Radziwill is Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University. She is the author of several books including, Disconnected: Technology Addiction & the Search for Authenticity in Virtual Life (2010) and The Undergrad Jungle Book: A Top Secret Collection of Tips, Tricks and Disclosures to Help You Brave the Wild Terrain of Undergraduate Academics (2011). Active in the American Society for Quality, she is Past Chair of the ASQ Software Division, has a PhD in Technology Management and Quality Systems from Indiana State University, is a Certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence, and was recently named one of ASQ's New Voices of Quality.

S. Shyam Sundar, Ph.D. is distinguished professor and founding director of the Media Effects Research Laboratory (http://www.psu.edu/dept/medialab) at Penn State University’s College of Communications. His research investigates social and psychological effects of technological elements unique to online communication. His lab group has been at the forefront of studying uses and effects of social media, particularly Facebook. Sundar was among the first to publish refereed research on the effects of digital media interfaces in leading communication journals, and has been identified as the most published author of Internet-related research in the field during the medium’s first decade. His research is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, MacArthur Foundation and Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services, among others. A frequently cited source on technology, Sundar has testified before the U.S. Congress as an expert witness and delivered talks at universities in several countries.

Dr. G (Deborah Gilboa, MD) is a Board Certified Family Physician, Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Pitt School of Medicine, a mom to four boys, and a professional parenting speaker and writer who is no stranger herself to the pitfalls of too much "connecting". What will be the next significant web application that comes along the social media space and captivates the whole world? Join our panel of technology experts, futurists, authors and academics as they discuss what's next for social networking.

Joseph Carrabis is a Senior Research Fellow at USC Annenberg's Center for the Digital Future and the author of 25 books, most recently Reading Virtual Minds Volume I: Science and History. He is founder and CRO of The NextStage Companies (NextStage Evolution, NextStage Global and NextStage Analytics), companies that specialize in helping clients improve their marketing efforts and understand customer behavior. Additionally, Carrabis is a Senior Research Fellow and Board Advisory Member for the Society for New Communications Research, a Founder, Senior Researcher and Director of Predictive Analytics for the Center for Adaptive Solutions and a member of Scientists Without Borders.

Brad Halferty is president and CEO of the social savings platform Twongo (www.twongo.com). In 2010, Brad launched Twongo in Cary, North Carolina and saved residents in the Triangle area of the state more than $1 million in retail goods and services in the company’s first year of operation. Since the launch, he has successfully expanded the business into Wilmington, N.C. and nationally into the Kelowna, Vancouver, Vernon and Whistler markets of British Columbia. A thought leader in the group buying industry, Brad recently spoke at the 2010 Internet Summit in Raleigh where he provided insights into the evolution of team buying and its effect on businesses, local economies and consumers. Lauren DeLong, Director of Strategic Sales, Leverage Software, brings fifteen years of strategic online marketing and IT experience to Leverage Software as the Director of Strategic Sales. Lauren has worked with Leverage Software for the past 4 years helping companies like The Home Depot, St. Jude Medical, L’Oreal, Hilton Hotels and others as a way to improve their employee communication by creating private social business networks. She holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an MBA in Entrepreneurship from Babson College.

Dr. Michael G Zey is the author of several books dealing with the social and economic impact of technology, leadership, mentoring, the superlongevity revolution, career development and other issues. His works include Ageless Nation: The Quest for Superlongevity and Physical Perfection, The Future Factor: The Five Forces Transforming Our Lives and Shaping Human Destiny, Seizing the Future, and The Mentor Connection. Michael Zey’s views on social and techno-trends have appeared in the LA Times, Providence (RI) Journal, Boston Globe, La Republicca, the Washington Times, Le Monde, and the Christian Science Monitor. He has been a contributor to KNX-AM, the Los-Angeles news affiliate of CBS,and has appeared on the Wall Street Journal Report, CNN, and ABC radio programs. He consults to Fortune 500 companies and government agencies on future trends, technology development and career issues. He is a Professor of Management at Montclair State University.

Andréa Maria Cecil is managing editor of the Harrisburg-based Central Penn Business Journal, where she has worked for more than four years. She oversees content on the Business Journal’s Web site and has created and managed its presence on various social-networking sites, including LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. The sites are among the Business Journal's top 25 Web-traffic sources. Andréa helps to manage the Business Journal’s day-to-day operations, including production of the weekly print publication, storyboarding and execution of special editorial supplements, and coaches reporters. She is the primary author of the gadget cube, the Business Journal’s technology-for-business blog, and founder of the York Tweetup Group that comprises more than 50 tech-savvy members from Central Pennsylvania who meet monthly in York.

Edgar C. Harrell is Managing Partner of Harrell Capital Partners, LLC, with more than 30 years of experience in managing private and public programs in the areas of privatization, technology commercialization, entrepreneurial training, capital market development, and private investment in and early stage financing of technology companies. Dr. Harrell serves on many boards including the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern, PA (a state funded early stage technology venture capital fund), The Penn State Research Foundation (licensing and patenting university generated research), Penn Venture Partners (second stage SBA guaranteed investment fund), the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority(State of Pa Board to review and make recommendations on business development investments and policies), Nomadio, Inc ( a control and telemetry systems software start-up company-retired), Pest Patrol (a security software start-up company that was purchased by Computer Associates in October 2004) and the Maryland Health Care Products Development Corp (a Md. Tech Council associated early investment fund for biotech and health care product/service companies).

Social Media and Intellectual Property Issues

The rise of social media creates a variety of intellectual property issues for users, brand owners, and website operators. Who owns accounts and content online? Who is liable when intellectual property rights are violates? How can brands ensure their intellectual property is protected and respected on social media platforms? This panel will discuss the many copyright and trademark issues generated by social media and provide tools for users and businesses to reduce the risk of generating intellectual property problems.

Erik Pelton is the founder of Erik M. Pelton & Associates, PLLC®, a boutique trademark law firm in Falls Church, VA. Prior to starting the firm, Erik worked for two years as an examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office. In more than a decade of private practice, he’s registered in excess of 1500 US trademarks for clients, represented dozens of parties in trademark disputes. He has spoken on social media issues to a variety of audiences, including at the American Bar Association’s annual meeting. Erik is also the creator of an iPhone application for intellectual property professionals called Apptorney®.

Kendra Metz, Integration Specialist at Pavone, a full-servicne marketing agency that works with national and international clientele including Turkey Hill Dairy, Campbell’s Soup Company, The Hershey Company, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Fulton Financial Corporation and Mount Nittany Medical Center. Kendra joined Pavone after a successful stint at The Hershey Company as an associate manager of digital and marketing analytics. She leads integrated digital marketing campaigns for major product launches and manages the company’s social media platform.

Rebecca A. Finkenbinder is an Associate in the McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC Intellectual Property and Food Industry Practice Groups. Rebecca's practice focuses on all aspects of trademark and copyright law including registration, licensing and protecting the intellectual property rights of owners against infringers and counterfeit goods. Her practice extends to franchise matters and assisting clients with advertising and branding strategies. Rebecca has assisted in the representation of clients on trademark matters both in federal court and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and on advertising matters before the National Advertising Division. Rebecca also regularly counsels clients on sweepstakes, website issues, and represents clients in domain name proceedings before the National Arbitration Forum. Prior to attending law school, she represented the Department of Defense in the acquisition, negotiation and administration of major weapon system and service contracts.
